Southeastern Emergency Digital Association Network
While most Amateur Radio operators use VOICE to
communicate, a growing number have connected their computers to their VHF ham
radios to exchange information using a wireless network of digital repeaters and
storage systems.
One such system is the Southeastern Emergency Digital Association Network
(SEDAN). Using nearly 50 digital repeaters installed throughout Florida, data can be
transferred quickly and efficiently.
SEDAN is managed by Barry Isbelle. The network has access to the State
Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee and the National Hurricane
Center in Miami. Many city and county emergency operation centers also have SEDAN
equipment. The draft Nassau County ARES communications plan lists SEDAN as the
back-up digital communications scheme, behind Winlink. SEDAN is unique in that
unlike either Winlink or D-Star, it's performance envelope is not dependent on
having an internet connection.
For more info on SEDAN, contact Barry Isbelle via N2Db@bisbelle.com or check the SEDAN website.
SEDAN operates only on 145.770 MHz. A map of the SEDAN nodes is on the SEDAN website here.
